Highway 193 crash traps injured driver
Suffering from major injuries to his legs, a Lincoln man was trapped inside his older-model Volkswagen Beetle after a crash Monday on Highway 193. The driver of the car – 47-year-old Michael Fischer – was removed from the wreckage after Cal-Fire personnel used extrication tools to pry open the car, California Highway Patrol Officer David Martinez said. Fischer sustained major injuries to both legs and was transported to Roseville Sutter Medical Center by ambulance. The collision took place at about 7:30 a.m. after Erika Courtright, 18, of rural Lincoln, pulled out of her driveway on Highway 193, west of Sierra College Boulevard. For reasons still under investigation, Courtright pulled out into traffic, directly into the front of the Volkswagen, Martinez said. The Fischer vehicle was traveling at 50 mph when the two cars collided. The front end of the rear-engine Volkswagen struck the left side of Courtright’s Mustang. Courtright, who suffered minor injuries, was treated and released, Martinez said. Road traffic was minimally impacted during the collision investigation, the Highway Patrol said.

I will watch out for Erica when I drive by her place. 'Sounds like she's not that good of a driver.
Me too!
Sounds like a case of misjudging the distance of the on-coming car.......or she was busy texting. It's a bummer that she presumably caused the accident and the other driver is the one who was injured badly. If I were her parents and she was at fault, I'd march her a** over to the hospital for a reality check on the man she injured. If his legs were badly crushed, he might not be walking for a long time.
Your totally right aimster.
Isn't 50mph alittle to fast to be going on 193? What is the actual speed limit on 193?
morgiejw,
The accident happened on the straight away between Lincoln and Sierra College Blvd. The speed limit for this particular part of the highway is 55mph.
First, you don't know what happened, you weren't there. Maybe she wasn't texting, maybe she isn't a bad driver. maybe the guy who got injured wasn't paying attention. And who the hell actually goes 50 on 193, because i doubt any of you do. Plus maybe she does know that she made a mistake and feels bad about it. So you Aimster and Catman123 are just being stupid and immature, don't assume anything that you don't know.People make mistakes and maybe she made one. I'm sure you guys have made mistakes and caused accidents too.
To blue95: I didn't claim to be there. What I do know is that the news story states that "COURTRIGHT PULLED OUT INTO TRAFFIC, DIRECTLY INTO THE FRONT OF THE VOLKSWAGEN". Actions speak louder than words and I'm suggesting that if she is at fault, she should get her little self to the hospital & see what she did to another person. Her actions didn't cause someone a bump on the head. The news story said "MAJOR INJURIES TO BOTH LEGS" Do you think this guy's life hasn't been altered by her actions???!!! He will not be able to work, undergo surgeries (that means more than one) physical therapy, pain. It will take months if not years away for this person's life.Basically, his life is ruined and she'll "like feel really bad" for a week and then get on with her life. When did it become so wrong for people to take personal responsibility for their actions? As for myself, I did have accidents as a young driver, but never more than a bump and exchange paint. I never crushed someone into their car.
One major problem with Humans in our day is they are not held accountable for their actions, especially youth. Most have grown up in a very self indulged society. Mr. Fischer is going to be affected for the rest of his life and according to the article Ms. Courtright is the cause. It clearly stated, " Erika Courtright, 18, of rural Lincoln, pulled out of her driveway on Highway 193, west of Sierra College Boulevard into traffic, directly into the front of the Volkswagen". Being 18 years old she certainly has not had many years opportunity for driving experience. However we do not know Ms. Courtright's emotional state with regards the accident and to assume she is not upset or disraught is unfair and harsh. However accountability is very important for proper Human Development it is neither "stupid or immature". With regards the speed limit, 55 IS the posted limit from Lincoln City limits due East 193 to Clarks Tunnel Rd. On a clear, dry day this is a Safe Speed. However there are driveways along this length and residents as well as the other driver should always be cautious.
Maybe there is more to the story than the newspaper states. You are only getting one side of the story and not the full thing from both parties. Neither Fischer and Courtright have stated their opinions on what happened in this article. They both probably have different views on what happened. I'm sure Courtright didn't intentionally pull out into traffic to cause an accident or to cause this man harm. I drove by the accident that morning and the guy was driving an older model volkswagen. In that type of car, they aren't meant to withstand an accident. Now, I'm just saying, that if that guy had been driving a different car he wouldn't have been as badly injured in the accident. Aimster, I got a question for you.....hasn't your mother ever taught you not to judge a book by its cover, that is basically what you are doing to Courtright. Just because she is probably an inexperienced driver, doesn't make her a bad one. You make it sound that since she is 18 and an "inexperienced " driver that she has no feelings for the guy that got injured and is not taking responsibility for her actions. This guy who got injured who is 47, has been driving for who knows how many years should have been more cautious of his surroundings and obsticles that may pop out at any time. On 193 you must be aware of your surroundings at all times. You must look out for deer, turkeys, bicyclists, and things in general. I think that they are both at fault from what the article sounds like.
Blue95: No, my mother taught me that if something quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck.....you know the rest. C'mon how do you think a stereotype gets to be a stereotype??
Perhaps instead of challenging me, you should ask the Auburn Journal to do a follow up story including the extext of Mr. Fischer's injuries and how long it will take hime to recover from them. How this will effect his ability to earn a living, pay his bills including mortgage. and walk normally again. Also, interview Ms. Courtright about how her dented mustang will effect her. Ask her if it is determined that she is at fault in the accident, what she plans to do to help Mr. Fischer?? I, for one who love more insight on the situation so that I don't have to speculate any longer.
According to the CVC 22350. " No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property". On this particular day at the stated time the conditions were clear, dry and unrestricted. Just because the situation was an accident and the victim was driving an older model vehicle does not put him at fault. He had already taken precautionary measures and was "more cautious of his surroundings" by reducing his speed below the stated limit.
To birdwing185: Thank you and I agree that what you drive does not put you at fault in an accident.
First off I do not understand why everyone is being so very judgmental. Yes Ms. Courtright is young but that does not mean she is a bad driver. I knowing her personally have driven with her many times and never felt uncomfortable. I know that Ms. Courtright would not have pulled out if she did not feel that it would be unsafe. Mr. Fischer being the "experienced" driver should have slowed down when he noticed her car pulling out. The comment about her texting is completely ubsurd, Erika keeps her phone on complete silence when she is driving, she never texts and if she needs to make a phone call she has a BlueTooth ear piece for that, so to say she was busy texting is just stereotyping. Since none of you know her you guys do not understand the guilt she is feeling at this moment and until a few days ago she did not even know Mr. Fischer's name. She has not contacted him yet, but she hopes soon that there will be a way for her to apologize. So before you judge and stereotype why don't you think how she feels.
Aimster,
I also know Ms. Courtwright personally.. She is a very responsible young adult & you have no reason to make the claims that you have.
Take note that the article above does not mention Mr. Fischer’s vehicle not having appeared to have swerved, or make an emergency stop, i.e.: tire marks left behind. The article also does not mention how Mr. Fischer’s vehicle hit Ms. Courtwright’s vehicle & spun her vehicle 180º. If he was only going 50mph, is that possible?? Most likely, but even you don’t know that.
This is just a brief news article that mentions the incident. The blame has been laid entirely on Ms. Courtwright & she may be very well be at fault, but until the pending investigation is finished, your claims are pure speculation. This was an accident – that is the only part of your duck story that has been correct at this time.
Keep in mind one of the terms of use here are:
You may not submit information that is libelous or defamatory or that discloses private or personal matters concerning any person.
So far you have no clue if she was texting or even on the phone for that matter. Yes, she may be a young driver, but you don’t know her from Adam & should not pass judgment on her. As I stated before, she is a fine young adult who I am positive will be in contact with Mr. Fischer to make amends. As for the terms of use, you should really stop defaming her character before someone makes a complaint about it.
