Zebras resume PVL play Friday at Bear River
Lincoln baseball team beats Rio Linda 5-1
Lincoln High’s varsity baseball team topped visiting Rio Linda 5-1 in a non-league game on Monday afternoon. Lincoln jumped ahead 4-1 after one inning and cruised the rest of the way. Junior Dusty Foster went 2-for-2 with a double, senior Matt Holt hit a homer and senior catcher Brent Marrell doubled in the win. Lincoln’s two top pitchers, Holt and senior Matt Paul, both were solid while getting in a few innings of work on the mound. Lincoln sophomore Marcus Maldonado was also strong out of the bullpen for the Zebras. The Zebras (4-2 overall, 1-1 in the Pioneer Valley League) will resume PVL play when they visit Bear River at 4 p.m. Friday. Lincoln was defeated 12-11 at El Dorado in a PVL game on Friday, falling behind 6-1 in the first inning. Lincoln led 11-10 entering the last of the sixth inning but the Cougars scored two runs in the last of the sixth. Paul, who was the starting pitcher, homered and drove in two runs in the loss while Foster was 3-5 with two doubles. The Zebras crushed visiting Mesa Verde 14-0 in the PVL opener two days earlier, scoring at least two runs in each inning. There were only five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Holt was the winning pitcher and he also went 2-2 with a double and three RBI. Paul (4-4, triple, six RBI), Sean Fox (2-3) and Foster (2-3, RBI) were offensive stars as well.
