Lincoln High’s Sarah Bietz helped the Zebras beat Mesa Verde on Tuesday.

Lincoln High’s coed tennis team traveled to Mesa Verde on Tuesday and won 7-2, improving its record to 6-1 this season.

Lincoln’s top boy Jeremy Orteza won easily (6-0, 6-2) while No. 2 singles player Rolando Desantiago pulled out a victory as well (6-4, 7-6).

Lincoln’s top girls, Jessica Ho (6-3, 6-1) and Sarah Bietz (6-0, 6-3), won their matches in straight sets. Lincoln seniors Mark Murphy and Cesar Balderas lost a close match in doubles (4-6, 7-6, 11-9).

Lincoln (1-1 in the PVL) lost the PVL opener to Placer on March 12 in Auburn. Placer has won the section championship for the last two years and the Hillmen beat the Zebras 9-0. However Lincoln coach Tim Allen is quick to point out that there were a lot of close matches.

Orteza lost his match 7-5, 6-1.

“Jeremy played well, especially in the first set, but in the end Dan (Fraguglia) was too consistent,” said Allen, noting that Fraguglia won the section singles title a year ago.

Ho lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Bietz was defeated 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Lincoln’s top doubles team on the girls side, featuring Jerusha Loya and Chloe Landry, lost in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 11-9). Lincoln’s No. 2 doubles team for the girls, Courtney Balonek and Lisa Donnelly, dropped a close match as well (6-4, 7-5). Lincoln’s mixed doubles duo of Austin Nippert and Caitlin Fischer also lost a close match (3-6, 6-3, 11-9).
